Woolwich International: Top archers set for Port Soif
World status guaranteed
GUERNSEY could witness a world record being set at the Woolwich International archery tournament in September, following the event's official recognition by FITA and GNAS, the sport's governing bodies.
The granting of official world status is certain to attract some of the top ranking archers, as their scores will be recognised internationally, including any world records set.
A team of judges from the UK will preside over the competition and entrants will be subject to random drug tests and equipment verification
The competition was already attracting attention from overseas.
Dave Inglis, a member of the Bowmen of Guernsey's organising committee, said: 'Of the one hundred or so competitors, we were planning for around 50% to come from outside of the island.
'We now believe that the quality of the field and the number of overseas entrants will grow substantially.
'It will allow Guernsey bowmen to shoot against some of the best archers in the world so we are expecting some personal records to be broken.
The Woolwich International Archery tournament will be Guernsey's first Open FITA event and will be held over the weekend 7-8 September.
It will add to an already full schedule of events for the Bowman of Guernsey in 2002, including the Jersey Triple in June and the Euro Nations championships to be held in Belfast.
It is also seen as excellent preparation for the Island's leading medal-winning team and will enable them to sharpen their skills prior to the Island Games in 2003.
